Helping Children Become Confident Readers Through Speech-Language Pathology, Orton-Gillingham & the Science of Reading
At Sea of Sounds, we don’t just teach children to read—we identify why they may be struggling.
Our Reading Clinics are uniquely designed by speech-language pathologists and literacy specialists, combining:
🗣️ Speech-Language Pathology
📚 Orton-Gillingham
🧠 The Science of Reading
This integrated approach allows us to strengthen the language foundation that supports successful reading, writing, and spelling.
Step 1: Register
Once your child is registered, we schedule a complimentary assessment.
This assessment helps us determine the most appropriate instructional level and allows us to develop individualized goals.
During the assessment, we look at much more than just reading.
We evaluate skills such as:
✔️ Letter-sound knowledge
✔️ Decoding
✔️ Encoding (spelling)
✔️ Reading fluency
✔️ Phonological awareness
✔️ Phonemic awareness
✔️ Oral language
✔️ Vocabulary
✔️ Listening comprehension
✔️ Speech sound production (when appropriate)
✔️ Language skills that may be impacting literacy
Because literacy and language are so closely connected, our speech-language pathology background helps us identify underlying areas that traditional reading programs may miss.
Small Groups Matter
Our clinics are intentionally limited to 6 students or fewer.
Small groups allow us to provide diagnostic, individualized instruction while maintaining the pace and integrity of the Orton-Gillingham approach.
Why We Ask Families to Commit for the School Year
Our Reading Clinics follow a systematic and cumulative scope and sequence.
What does that mean?
Each lesson builds directly on previously taught concepts.
Students only move on after demonstrating mastery of foundational skills.
For example:
Letter sounds → blending → digraphs → blends → vowel teams → multisyllabic words → morphology → advanced decoding and comprehension.
If a child frequently misses classes or joins midway through the sequence, important foundational concepts may be missed, making future lessons much more difficult.
This is why we recommend committing to the entire school year whenever possible.
Learning to read is a process—not a quick fix.
Progress Monitoring
We believe families should always know how their child is progressing.
Students receive:
📊 A mid-year assessment
📊 An end-of-year assessment
These assessments allow us to measure growth, celebrate progress, adjust instruction when needed, and share detailed results with families.
Parent Communication
Communication is one of our highest priorities.
Throughout the year, parents receive ongoing updates about:
• Skills being taught
• Student progress
• Areas needing reinforcement
• Home practice recommendations
• Opportunities to ask questions and collaborate with our team
We believe that when families and clinicians work together, children make the greatest progress.
Our Goal
Our mission is to help children become confident, successful readers by addressing the whole child—communication, language, reading, spelling, writing, and learning—through evidence-based instruction rooted in Speech-Language Pathology, Orton-Gillingham, and the Science of Reading.
Registration is now open for our Bay Ridge and Staten Island Reading Clinics.
